Zuni bears are a favourite motif of the American southwest. They also seem quite appropriate here in rural Alberta where bears are often our next door neighbours. I made a pair last year from tiger eye. These ones are a pearlized shell — creamy white on one side (shown in the photo) and almost entirely brown on the reverse. The cream-coloured side reminds me of the spirit bears on the West Coast.
The second pair are made of polished stone. I like the earth tones — brown, black, pale orange, dull cream. You can also see faint cracks and a rough edge, like the earth itself.
