More than 20 artists are participating in the silent auction at the ARTS Roundup Show & Sale in Airdrie on Friday September 14 from 7 to 11 pm.
The Empress is my submission. The necklace and earring set is made with iridescent Japanese seed beads and fire-polished Czech beads.
Fire-polishing is an interesting and intricate process. It begins with molten glass that is poured into round bead molds. Once the glass cools, the beads are cut with a grinding wheel to make facets — those flat surfaces that bounce light back to your eye, adding sparkle to the beads. Finally the beads are reheated just enough to melt the surface, “polishing” away any small imperfections.
These beads also had additional colour added, to produce the lovely shades you see.
I’ve been working on several pieces especially for this show — it’s a great incentive to produce new work. 🙂
